Police arrested a Capitol Heights man on Wednesday in connection with a string of car parts thefts that afflicted the campus last month, University Police said.

Michael Timothy Macon, 30, was charged with eight counts of theft and is currently being held on $10,000 bond at the Prince George’s County Correctional Center.

His arrest is related to several catalytic converters that were stolen from parked cars on the campus last month, University Police spokesman Paul Dillon said.

The morning of Oct. 8, police received reports that catalytic converters were missing from four cars in three different campus lots, according to a crime alert sent out the next day. Four more converters were stolen on different dates later in October, Dillon said.

Footage from security cameras eventually led to Macon’s arrest, Dillon said, explaining that University Police had footage of the suspect’s car leaving the campus and were able to track him down based on his license plate number. He was arrested in Capitol Heights.

Once police thought they found a car with matching license plates to the police description, they conducted interviews that led to Macon’s arrest, Dillon said.

Dillon said Macon had been stealing catalytic converters, a component of a car’s exhaust system, from all over the Washington metropolitan area, including Prince George’s and Fairfax counties, and admitted to stealing the parts from campus parking lots.

Macon has no affiliation with the university.
